Year-end giving to Making Heaven Crowded
Which date counts for a 2026 gift, by method, and how the receipt is dated.
The date that counts depends on how you give
To have a gift count toward the 2026 tax year, it has to be made by December 31, 2026, and the IRS decides the “made” date by method: the day a card is charged, the day a check is mailed, the day a bank pays a transfer. Making Heaven Crowded has not published a bank or processing cutoff of its own, and this page will not invent one.
Making Heaven Crowded is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 42-2985750. You can start any gift on the giving page in a couple of minutes. The rest of this page is about timing, so that a gift you mean for 2026 is not dated 2027 by accident.
Which date to keep proof of
IRS Publication 526 has a section called “When To Deduct.” Its rules, in plain words, and what they mean for the five ways to give here:
- Card, Apple Pay or Google Pay: a gift charged to a bank credit card is deductible in the year of the charge, even if you pay the bill later. See giving by card.
- Check by mail: a mailed check counts as delivered on the day you mail it. See giving by check.
- Zelle: for a transfer from a bank account, the IRS looks at the date the financial institution pays the amount, which should appear on your statement. See giving by Zelle.
- PayPal and Cash App: the IRS has no rule written for these apps by name. Keep the statement line showing when the money left your account or card, and ask a preparer which rule fits yours.
None of this is tax advice. It is a reading of a public IRS publication, and your own return decides what you can deduct.
How the receipt is dated
The date printed on a Making Heaven Crowded receipt is the day the gift was started on the website. For manual methods such as Zelle, Cash App and check, the team matches the gift when it lands, usually within a day, and the official receipt is emailed after that. Weekends and bank delays can stretch the wait, so a receipt for a late-December gift may reach you in January.
That is why the best habit is to start the gift on the website on the day you pay or mail it. The receipt date and your own proof of payment then agree. The page on your donation receipt and reference code lists every line the receipt carries.
Four steps for a December gift
- Start the gift on the giving page, so it carries a 2026 date and you get your reference code.
- Pay, or mail the check, the same day. Do not leave a check on the counter over the holidays.
- Save your own proof: the card or bank statement line, or the day you mailed the check.
- Watch your email. If the receipt has not come after a few days, write Makingheavencrowdedtampa@gmail.com or call (941) 718-2867 and quote your code.
Repeating gifts and the $250 rule
A repeating gift is a series of separate payments, so each one is dated on its own. If you give monthly, the December payment lands in 2026 and the January payment in 2027. How the monthly option works is on the page about giving monthly.
For one gift of $250 or more, the IRS expects a written acknowledgment, and the Making Heaven Crowded receipt carries the line that no goods or services were provided in exchange. The page on whether a gift is tax-deductible explains how to confirm the organization’s status yourself.
What a year-end gift funds
Gifts fund three things: homeless outreach on foot in downtown Tampa and Gainesville, outreach to college students and young adults, and missions and evangelism training. The food is what starts the conversations. The impact numbers page shows the meals and water handed out since October 2025.

Year-end giving
- What is the last day to give for a 2026 tax year gift?
- The tax year ends December 31, 2026, and which day counts depends on how you give. A charge is dated by the card, a mailed check by the day it is mailed, and a bank transfer by the day the bank pays it. Making Heaven Crowded has not published its own cutoff.
- My check will arrive in January. Does it still count for 2026?
- The IRS treats a check as delivered on the day you mail it, so a check mailed by December 31 is generally a 2026 gift even if it is opened in January. Keep proof of the mailing day and start the gift on the website the same day.
- Will my receipt show a 2026 date if the team confirms it in January?
- The date printed on the receipt is the day the gift was started on the website, not the day it was matched. A gift you start on December 29 and the team matches on January 2 carries December 29.
- Is a gift to Making Heaven Crowded tax-deductible?
- Making Heaven Crowded is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 42-2985750. Whether you can deduct a gift depends on your own return, so ask a tax preparer.
- Does a monthly gift count toward 2026?
- Each monthly gift is a separate payment, and each is dated by the rule for the method that paid it. A payment made on or before December 31 falls in 2026 and the January one falls in 2027.
- Is there a match or a Giving Tuesday campaign?
- Not that Making Heaven Crowded has announced. This page lists none, and any gift made on Giving Tuesday is an ordinary gift receipted the usual way.
