Making Heaven Crowded was started by college students. The Gainesville branch is where University of Florida students walk downtown and share the Gospel themselves.
This was a student idea before it was anything else
Yes. If you are a University of Florida student, you can serve with Making Heaven Crowded’s Gainesville branch. Volunteers pray, pack food and water, and walk downtown Gainesville in small groups to serve people and share the Gospel. MHC is independent of UF, and no experience is required.
Making Heaven Crowded was founded in October 2025 by a group of college students in Tampa, Florida. It has grown from five volunteers to more than thirty, and opened a second ministry branch in Gainesville. That origin is not trivia — it is why the Gainesville team does not treat students as an audience to be programmed for.
If you are at the University of Florida and you have been looking for something more than another weekly meeting, this is the offer: come out on a Saturday, carry food, and talk to strangers about Jesus. You will be doing the ministry, not watching it.
Making Heaven Crowded is an independent 501(c)(3) Christian nonprofit (EIN 42-2985750). It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a registered student organisation of the University of Florida.
Reaching students, and going with students
MHC’s next generation outreach runs in both directions. College students and young adults are among the people the team sets out to reach — and they are also a large share of the people doing the reaching.
A Gainesville outreach usually means:
- Meeting to pray and pack food and bottled water
- Walking downtown Gainesville in small groups
- Serving whoever is there — people experiencing homelessness, students, anyone on the block

Nervous about talking to strangers? Good.
Almost everyone is, the first time. Nobody gets dropped downtown alone on day one — new volunteers go out with someone who has done it before, and the first outreach is mostly listening and handing out water.

What joining actually looks like, start to finish
Most UF students who wonder about this want to know the practical steps before they commit to anything. Here they are, in order:
- Submit the Gainesville volunteer form from the Get Involved page, or message the Gainesville team on Instagram.
- The team tells you where and when the group is meeting.
- You meet, pray together, and help pack food and bottled water.
- You walk downtown in a small group, alongside someone who has done it before.
- You hand out food and water, listen, and talk with whoever is willing — and pray with anyone who asks.

Going to where people already are
The Gainesville branch does not wait for people to come to a meeting. It walks the streets of downtown Gainesville and meets people there, which is the same approach the team uses on Serving Saturdays in Tampa and Gainesville. The people on those streets include individuals experiencing homelessness, other college students and young adults, and anyone else who happens to be on the block.
That mix is deliberate. MHC says it seeks to reach people from all backgrounds and walks of life, and that every person is created in the image of God and deserves dignity, compassion, and love. For a student, that means the person you hand a bottle of water to might be a classmate or might be sleeping outside. A student idea that kept growing
Since October 2025, MHC reports 2,800+ meals and 3,000+ bottles of water handed out on the street. Those totals cover the whole ministry in Tampa and Gainesville together, not the Gainesville branch alone, and they come from the team’s own count. The full breakdown is on the impact numbers page.

- Is there a college ministry for UF students in Gainesville?
- Yes. Making Heaven Crowded runs a Gainesville ministry branch doing street evangelism and outreach in downtown Gainesville, and it is open to University of Florida students. MHC is not a UF department or an officially affiliated campus organization. It is an independent Christian nonprofit whose Gainesville team includes students.
- Do I have to be a strong Christian already to come?
- No. Students arrive with very different backgrounds and levels of confidence. New volunteers always go out alongside people who have done it before, and the team will walk you through it. You do not need to know how to answer every question to hand someone water and listen.
