Discipleship training at Making Heaven Crowded follows the framework behind SENT Sessions, our evangelism training initiative, which is paused right now. It is not a weekend seminar that ends in a certificate. It is built around three steps — Equipped by the Word, Trained in Truth, Sent into the World — and the last step happens outdoors, in Tampa or Gainesville.
Our desire is for those who participate to not only learn about evangelism but to actively live as disciples who are willing to go.
The framework exists because "make disciples" is a command, not a suggestion. Matthew 28:18–20, the Great Commission, is the passage the whole ministry is built on: go and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey what Jesus commanded. Discipleship training is how Making Heaven Crowded takes that literally rather than leaving it as a slogan on a wall.
Equipped, trained, sent
1. Equipped by the Word
Grounding what you believe, and what you say, in Scripture rather than opinion. This step is deliberately first: a disciple who cannot say where a claim comes from will not hold up under a real question on the street.
2. Trained in Truth
Practising the conversation itself, including the hard questions people actually ask — not the easy ones a textbook expects. Volunteers train with each other before they train in front of a stranger. Jesus gave his disciples a mark to be known by, as explained in John 13:34-35 on loving one another, and training aims at that love as much as at knowledge.
3. Sent into the World
The training ends on the street, in downtown Tampa or downtown Gainesville, with an experienced volunteer walking alongside a new one. Nobody trains in a room and stops there.
What the training is actually building toward
Discipleship training is not the whole mission; it is the part that makes the rest of it possible. Making Heaven Crowded’s eight-point vision includes four commitments that a trained disciple is what actually carries out on the street:
- Proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ
- Reach people from all backgrounds and walks of life
- Serve individuals in practical ways
- Build genuine relationships with the people we encounter
None of those four happen from a stage or a strategy document. They happen when a volunteer who has been through Equipped by the Word and Trained in Truth is standing in front of an actual person in downtown Tampa or Gainesville, deciding in real time how to serve them practically and speak to them honestly. That is the gap discipleship training closes, between believing something is true and being able to live it out with a stranger who has never heard it before.
That is also why the framework was never meant as a one-time class. What is learned is tested at that week’s outreach, not stored up for a later trip, and a volunteer who is still unsure how to answer a hard question can ask an experienced teammate before the next one. The three steps repeat as a cycle a volunteer keeps returning to, not a ladder someone climbs once and leaves behind. Paul says in Romans 1:16 that he is not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for salvation, and Romans 10:14-15 explains why someone has to be sent to say it.
Grounded in Scripture, not opinion

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’"

This is the Great Commission. We are called to go and make disciples of ALL the nations.
Two of the eight points in Making Heaven Crowded’s stated vision are directly about this: “Equip future evangelists and missionaries” and “Train disciples to confidently share the Gospel.” Discipleship training is how both of those move from a list on a page to something a volunteer actually does.

Training is meant to end in a real conversation, and 1 Peter 3:15 explained covers the gentle, ready answer it aims for, while short-term missions in Florida describes a way to put that training to use over a shorter commitment. - What does discipleship training mean at Making Heaven Crowded?
- It means learning to follow Jesus Christ well enough to help someone else start, following the framework behind SENT Sessions: Equipped by the Word, Trained in Truth, Sent into the World. SENT Sessions itself is paused right now, so volunteers learn alongside experienced team members on outreach. It is not a classroom certificate. It ends on the street, in Tampa or Gainesville.
- Is discipleship training the same thing as evangelism training?
- They overlap but are not identical. Evangelism training focuses on the conversation itself — how to share the Gospel with a stranger. Discipleship training is the wider process of being formed as a follower of Jesus Christ, inside and outside of Making Heaven Crowded, which the SENT Sessions framework serves as one part.
- Do I need to already know the Bible well to start?
- No. Grounding what you say in Scripture rather than opinion is the first step of the framework, not a prerequisite for it. Volunteers arrive at very different starting points, and the framework is built to move someone from wherever they are to being able to explain what they believe.
- Where does discipleship training happen in Florida?
- Making Heaven Crowded runs it through both ministry branches, Tampa and Gainesville, with the stated vision of expanding throughout Florida and beyond. The approach is the same in both cities; only the outreach location changes. The formal SENT Sessions classes are paused right now. - How is this different from just reading a book on discipleship?
- A book does not walk downtown Tampa or Gainesville with you. MHC pairs the teaching with an actual outreach and an experienced volunteer alongside a new one, so what is learned is tested the same week, not stored up for later.
