A case of water is the cheapest, fastest way to put something genuinely needed into someone’s hands downtown — and it is always the first thing we run out of.
Why water
In a Tampa summer, water is not a small gift
Making Heaven Crowded started with granola bars, fruit and water bought at Publix and carried through downtown Tampa. That has not really changed. Food and water are still how the conversation starts — you cannot talk with someone about anything that matters while they are standing in the sun, thirsty, waiting for you to finish.
Someone living outside in Tampa has no reliable, free, safe source of cold drinking water for most of the day. A sealed bottle handed directly to a person solves that for the next few hours and costs about a quarter. There are very few gifts with that ratio.

What to buy
What actually works on a walking outreach
- Sealed single-serve bottles, around 16.9 oz, bought by the case. One bottle, one person, still sealed when it changes hands.
- Full cases rather than loose bottles — easier to carry, easier to count, easier to split between the Tampa and Gainesville teams.
- Electrolyte drink powders or sports drinks in the hottest months, alongside water rather than instead of it.
- Insulated bags or a cooler if you have one going spare. Cold water on an August afternoon is a noticeably different gift from warm water.
What does not work: gallon jugs, glass bottles, anything already opened, and flavored drinks with a short shelf life. Bottles need to survive a trunk, a walk and a Florida afternoon before anyone drinks them.

- Standard sealed single-serve bottles, roughly 16.9 oz, in full cases. They are easy to carry, easy to hand to one person, and stay sealed until they are opened. Gallon jugs and open containers are not practical to distribute on a walking outreach.
- How much water does an outreach go through?
- Making Heaven Crowded has handed out more than 3,000 bottles of water since October 2025 across its Tampa and Gainesville outreaches, alongside more than 2,800 meals.
- Can I give money toward water instead?
- Yes. A gift of $25 covers food and water for a street outreach. Making Heaven Crowded is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 42-2985750, and gifts are tax deductible.
