A case of water is the cheapest, fastest way to put something genuinely needed into someone’s hands downtown — and it is always the first thing we run out of. Psalm 146:7-9 on the LORD who gives food to the hungry puts a bottle of water in a larger story about who provides.
In a Tampa summer, water is not a small gift
Making Heaven Crowded started with granola bars, fruit and water bought at Publix and carried through downtown Tampa. That has not really changed. Food and water are still how the conversation starts — you cannot talk with someone about anything that matters while they are standing in the sun, thirsty, waiting for you to finish.
Someone living outside in Tampa has no reliable, free, safe source of cold drinking water for most of the day. A sealed bottle handed directly to a person solves that for the next few hours and costs about a quarter. There are very few gifts with that ratio. Giving without expecting anything back is what Jesus asks of a host in Luke 14:12-14 on inviting the poor, and a case of water given this way is a small version of it.

What actually works on a walking outreach
- Sealed single-serve bottles, around 16.9 oz, bought by the case. One bottle, one person, still sealed when it changes hands.
- Full cases rather than loose bottles — easier to carry, easier to count, easier to split between the Tampa and Gainesville teams.
- Electrolyte drink powders or sports drinks in the hottest months, alongside water rather than instead of it.
- Insulated bags or a cooler if you have one going spare. Cold water on an August afternoon is a noticeably different gift from warm water.
What does not work: gallon jugs, glass bottles, anything already opened, and flavored drinks with a short shelf life. Bottles need to survive a trunk, a walk and a Florida afternoon before anyone drinks them.

A case lasts one Saturday, not one season
Serving Saturdays runs on a repeating schedule, not as an occasional event, which means the water goes out every time the team walks downtown Tampa — not just on a single big push. A case handed off once covers one outreach; a donor who gives every month or two keeps the team from running out mid-summer, which is exactly when the need is highest. Deuteronomy 15:7-11 on the open hand explains why even a simple case of water counts as obedience to a very old command.
That's also why a group donation goes further than it looks. A small group, office, or church that pools a few cases at once can cover an entire Saturday's water on its own, freeing up what the team would otherwise have to buy that week. The words of Jesus in Matthew 10:40-42 about a cup of cold water are a good reminder that even the smallest practical kindness is noticed, including a case of bottles handed to a team.
