Evangelism training in Gainesville
SENT Sessions, our formal evangelism training, is paused right now. New volunteers in Gainesville go out alongside experienced team members and are never sent out on their own, carrying the Gospel to students, the community, and people the rest of the city walks past.
Equipped by the Word. Sent into the world.
This is the framework SENT Sessions was built around. The program is paused right now.
Our desire is for those who participate to not only learn about evangelism but to actively live as disciples who are willing to go.
Learning here, sent into this city
New volunteers in Gainesville go out with our local teams — walking downtown Gainesville in homeless outreach and reaching students through our Gainesville college ministry. The goal is not just to learn about evangelism, but to live as disciples who are willing to go — which starts with understanding what street evangelism actually is, and where the SENT Sessions program stands. The Scripture behind asking for workers to reach a crowd of people is explained in Matthew 9:36-38 explained, and the weekly Saturday outreach where new volunteers learn is described at Serving Saturdays.
The conviction behind Gainesville's training
Gainesville's teaching leans on Matthew 25:40: "The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’" Jesus explains to us: how we treat the least of our brothers and sisters in Christ, is how we treat Him. That shapes the posture volunteers are taught before their first walk downtown — every person is worth the same care, not just the people who are easy to talk to.
It's paired with Matthew 28:18–20, the Great Commission: This is the Great Commission. We are called to go and make disciples of ALL the nations. The Gainesville team treats that call as personal, not abstract — it's the reason the branch exists in the first place.
Learning doesn't stay in a room. Everyone who starts with the Gainesville team is encouraged to use it the same week, whether in a conversation during homeless outreach downtown or with a student through Gainesville college ministry. Paul’s picture in Romans 12:4-8 of one body with many members is a reminder that every volunteer brings a different gift to a Gainesville team.

Common questions about Gainesville evangelism training
- Is SENT Sessions running in Gainesville right now?
- No. SENT Sessions, Making Heaven Crowded's evangelism training, is paused right now. It follows a three-step framework used across MHC: Equipped by the Word, Trained in Truth, Sent into the World. In the meantime, new volunteers in Gainesville go out alongside experienced team members and are never sent out on their own.
- Who can start with the Gainesville team?
- Anyone is welcome. No prior experience sharing the Gospel is expected — most volunteers have never had that kind of conversation before their first outreach in the city, and they learn by walking with people who have.
- What idea shapes how Gainesville volunteers are taught?
- The teaching rests on Matthew 25:40: "The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’" Jesus explains to us: how we treat the least of our brothers and sisters in Christ, is how we treat Him. That conviction shapes how Gainesville volunteers are taught to treat every single person they meet downtown, whoever that person is.
