What is street evangelism?
Street evangelism is simply sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with people where they already are — on sidewalks, near college campuses, at bus stops, wherever a real conversation can happen. It’s the practice at the center of everything MHC does in Tampa and Gainesville.
The basics
A conversation, not a script
At its core, street evangelism is one person telling another person about who Jesus is and what the Gospel means, in an ordinary, unscripted setting. It can happen while handing someone a meal during homeless outreach, while talking with a student on a college campus, or simply while walking through downtown and striking up a conversation.
It’s not about approaching people with a checklist or a sales pitch. It’s about genuine relationship first — listening to someone, meeting a practical need where you can, and then being honest about your own faith and what it means to you. Some conversations are brief. Some turn into ongoing friendships. Both matter.
Because it happens in person and in public, street evangelism takes a mix of preparation and courage: knowing what you believe well enough to talk about it plainly, and being willing to start a conversation with a stranger.
How MHC trains for it
SENT Sessions: Equipped by the Word. Sent into the world.
MHC's evangelism training initiative, designed to equip disciples with the biblical knowledge, practical skills, and confidence necessary to proclaim the Gospel. The framework has three parts: Equipped by the Word, Trained in Truth, Sent into the World. Our desire is for those who participate to not only learn about evangelism but to actively live as disciples who are willing to go.
MHC runs SENT Sessions for volunteers in both Tampa and Gainesville, so no one heads out to do street evangelism without first being equipped for it. You don’t need prior experience — the training exists precisely so first-timers feel ready. The SENT Sessions page explains the three steps in full.
