Evangelism training in Tampa

SENT Sessions, our formal evangelism training, is still a vision, and so far one session has been held. New volunteers in Tampa, where Making Heaven Crowded began in October 2025, go out alongside experienced team members and are never sent out on their own.

The framework

Equipped by the Word. Sent into the world.

This is the framework SENT Sessions was built around. The program is still a vision, and so far one session has been held.

Equipped by the WordTrained in TruthSent into the World

Our desire is for those who participate to not only learn about evangelism but to actively live as disciples who are willing to go.

Trained to go

Training that leads straight to the streets

Training was never meant to be a classroom for its own sake. Volunteers go out with our teams — into weekly homeless outreach in downtown Tampa and next-gen outreach to Tampa college students— building genuine relationships and proclaiming the Gospel where people actually are. If the practice itself is new to you, start with what street evangelism actually is, or see where the SENT Sessions program stands.

Why train at all

The call behind the training

MHC's training is built on Matthew 28:18–20: "Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’" This is the Great Commission. We are called to go and make disciples of ALL the nations. Tampa volunteers walk through what that actually looks like in practice — not memorizing a script, but learning to have a real conversation with a real person on a Tampa street.

None of this stays in the room it's taught in. Everyone who starts with the Tampa team is encouraged to put it to use the same week, whether that's a conversation during homeless outreach downtown or with a student through Tampa college ministry. Anyone ready to start can volunteer with the Tampa team without any prior experience.

Your first outreach

What your first outreach with the Tampa team looks like

Joining the Tampa team starts with the Tampa volunteer form. Someone follows up with the next outreach date, and the meeting time and location are shared with volunteers directly after they sign up, so there is nothing to look up in advance.

On the day, the team meets, packs food and bottled water, and prays, then walks downtown Tampa in small groups. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes and clothing suited to Florida heat or rain, and bring water for yourself. An outreach takes a few hours, and nothing asks you to commit to a weekly schedule.

Your part on a first outreach is small on purpose: walk beside an experienced volunteer, ask names, and listen. For the format in more detail, see Serving Saturdays, the volunteer FAQ andvolunteer opportunities in Tampa.

Questions

Common questions about Tampa evangelism training

Is SENT Sessions running in Tampa right now?
No. SENT Sessions, Making Heaven Crowded's evangelism training initiative, is still a vision, and so far one session has been held. It was built around three steps: Equipped by the Word, Trained in Truth, Sent into the World. In the meantime, new volunteers in Tampa go out alongside experienced team members and are never sent out on their own.
Who can start with the Tampa team?
Anyone. No prior evangelism experience is required — most volunteers have never shared the Gospel with a stranger before their first outreach, and they learn by walking with people who have.
What does the Tampa team prepare someone to do?
MHC's training is built on Matthew 28:18–20. Volunteers go into Tampa's weekly homeless outreach and Next Gen Outreach to college students, learning as they go.
Where can I read more about SENT Sessions?
The SENT Sessions page explains the three-step framework and says plainly that the program is still a vision, and so far one session has been held. This page covers how Tampa volunteers are getting started in the meantime.
How do I get started in Tampa?
Sign up as a Tampa volunteer through the Get Involved page — learning happens alongside active outreach, so joining the team is the way in. You can also follow the Tampa team on Instagram or reach out directly by email or phone with questions first.
