The Making Heaven Crowded Tampa team of college students and young adults gathered together
Tampa, Florida

College ministry in Tampa — built by college students

Making Heaven Crowded started in October 2025 with a group of Tampa college students, and has grown from 5 to more than 30 volunteers. We reach college students and young adults with the Gospel — because the next generation is hungry for the truth, and Jesus is the only answer. Students who join are described in 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 as ambassadors for Christ, people who speak on behalf of the one who sent them.

Next Gen Outreach

Reaching the next generation in Tampa

We do not just serve the homeless — we serve the LOST. Our teams build genuine relationships with students and young adults throughout the streets and communities of Tampa, meeting people where they are and introducing them to Jesus. This same heart drives our weekly homeless outreach in downtown Tampa. Students who want to join that team can sign up as a Tampa volunteer and be on the street with us the very next Saturday.

Getting started

Learn alongside the team

Next Gen Outreach volunteers go out with experienced team members and are never sent out alone. MHC’s formal SENT Sessions training is paused right now.

In Tampa, the ministry’s original founding group — the students who started with five people in October 2025 — still walks with each new volunteer. You can volunteer in Tampa or read about evangelism training in Tampa. Students who want the Scripture behind the ministry can start with Matthew 9:36-38 explained, and the ministry’s reach beyond campus is explained in digital ministry and Instagram. A team of students who pray and serve together is a picture of John 13:34-35 on loving one another, the mark of a disciple that Jesus describes.

Beyond one campus

What Tampa's college ministry actually covers

Next Gen Outreach is not limited to one campus. It reaches college students and young adults wherever MHC's Tampa team finds them — dorms, coffee shops, downtown, and everywhere the weekly outreach already walks. For students who want a program built specifically around the University of South Florida campus, see college ministry at USF— a more focused version of the same mission described here.

The approach reflects the same commitments MHC holds across every part of the ministry: reach people from all backgrounds and walks of life, equip future evangelists and missionaries, and train disciples to confidently share the gospel. A student who gets plugged in doesn't just hear about the Gospel once — they walk alongside experienced volunteers and, for many, end up leading the next conversation themselves. Paul’s picture of the church as one body with many parts, explained in Romans 12:4-8 on many members and one body, fits a student team where everyone has a different strength.

It's also the same team and the same heart behind weekly homeless outreach in downtown Tampa. Volunteers move freely between reaching students and serving people on the street, because both are the same call lived out in different rooms of the same city. Students who pack bags and walk the route can take Colossians 3:23-24 as a reminder to work heartily, as for the Lord and not for people.

Questions

Common questions about Tampa college ministry

What is Making Heaven Crowded's college ministry in Tampa?
It's Next Gen Outreach — MHC's effort to build genuine relationships with college students and young adults throughout Tampa and introduce them to Jesus. It grew out of the same group of Tampa college students who started Making Heaven Crowded in October 2025, and it now runs alongside the ministry's homeless outreach and evangelism training.
Is Tampa college ministry only for University of South Florida students?
No. This page covers Next Gen Outreach across Tampa broadly. MHC also runs a USF-specific campus ministry program with its own page, for students who want something tied directly to that campus. Both reach the same next generation; USF students are welcome at either.
Is there training before I join Next Gen Outreach?
New volunteers go out alongside experienced team members and are never sent out on their own. MHC's formal evangelism training, SENT Sessions, is paused right now, so you learn on the street with the team. See the Tampa volunteer page or call (941) 718-2867 to get started.
How do I get involved with Tampa's college ministry?
Sign up as a Tampa volunteer through the Get Involved page — the same sign-up used for homeless outreach, since volunteers regularly move between both. No experience is required. You can also follow the Tampa team on Instagram or reach out directly by email or phone.
Is Making Heaven Crowded a registered nonprofit?
Yes. Making Heaven Crowded is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 42-2985750, and gifts are tax deductible. Gifts support Next Gen Outreach in Tampa alongside homeless outreach and evangelism training in Tampa and Gainesville. Gifts can be given by Zelle, card, PayPal, Cash App, or check.
