A common question
Is Making Heaven Crowded a church?
No — and understanding what MHC actually is explains a lot about how it operates in Tampa and Gainesville.
The short answer
No — and that’s intentional
A Christian evangelism and missions organization based in Tampa, Florida, with ministry branches in Tampa and Gainesville.
That distinction matters practically, not just technically. MHC has no Sunday service, no building people join as members, and no weekly congregation. What it has instead is a street outreach team in Tampa, a sister team in Gainesville, and an evangelism training track called SENT Sessions — organized entirely around one task rather than around weekly worship.
What MHC is instead
A parachurch ministry, by design
In Christian ministry terms, MHC is a parachurch organization — a ministry that works alongside churches, focused on one specific task, rather than a congregation in its own right. That task is to make Heaven crowded by faithfully proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and equipping disciples to take the Gospel into the world.
In practice, MHC exists to proclaim the gospel of jesus christ, to reach people from all backgrounds and walks of life, and to equip future evangelists and missionaries. None of those require a congregation, a building, or a Sunday service to carry out — they require teams willing to walk downtown Tampa or Gainesville and have a real conversation.
Plenty of well-known evangelism and missions organizations work the same way — focused on one task, built to serve churches rather than replace them. MHC follows that same model deliberately.
Working alongside churches
Volunteers come from everywhere
Because MHC is not itself a church, it does not require volunteers to belong to a particular congregation, or any congregation, to join an outreach. People who show up for college ministry in Tampa or Gainesville come from different churches across both cities, and some from none at all when they start.
The aim is for that to work in both directions — a volunteer trained through SENT Sessions carries what they learn back into whatever church they already attend, rather than MHC trying to become one itself.
Why the distinction matters
It changes what you’re signing up for
Knowing MHC is not a church changes what a first-time volunteer or donor should actually expect. There is no membership roll to join, no weekly service to attend, and no expectation that supporting MHC replaces being part of a local congregation. What MHC asks for instead is far more specific: time on an outreach, a prayer, or a gift directed at one stated task.
That also means MHC’s nonprofit status is exactly what it says it is — a registered 501(c)(3) organized around evangelism and missions, not a religious congregation claiming tax-exempt status as a church. Anyone can verify that directly on the tax-deductibility page, which covers how to check MHC’s EIN independently.
See the mission for yourself
The clearest way to understand what MHC is, is to see an outreach in person.

Questions
Is MHC a church?
- Is Making Heaven Crowded a church?
- No. A Christian evangelism and missions organization based in Tampa, Florida, with ministry branches in Tampa and Gainesville. MHC does not hold Sunday services, does not have members, and does not function as a congregation. It is a parachurch ministry — organized around outreach and evangelism, not around weekly worship gatherings.
- What is a parachurch organization, exactly?
- A parachurch organization is a Christian ministry that operates alongside churches rather than as one — usually focused on one specific task, like missions, outreach, or evangelism training. MHC fits that model: its task is proclaiming the Gospel through homeless outreach, next-generation ministry, and evangelism training.
- Do I have to attend a specific church to volunteer with MHC?
- No. MHC does not require volunteers to belong to any particular church, or to belong to a church at all, in order to join an outreach in Tampa or Gainesville. Volunteers come from a range of church backgrounds and some from none, united around the same outreach.
- If MHC isn't a church, where does the money go that's donated?
- Making Heaven Crowded is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 42-2985750. Gifts fund homeless outreach, next-generation outreach to students and young adults, and missions and evangelism training — not a congregation's operating budget, because MHC does not run weekly services and has none.
- Does MHC work with local churches?
- MHC's mission is to make heaven crowded by faithfully proclaiming the gospel of jesus christ and equipping disciples to take the gospel into the world. That mission is meant to serve churches, not compete with them — equipping disciples who then carry what they learn back into whatever congregation they already belong to.
