How to give by Cash App to Making Heaven Crowded
The amount fills in for you. The note is the one step you do by hand, and it is the one that matters.
Open Cash App from the giving screen, add your code to the note, and send
To give by Cash App, open the giving page, choose an amount, enter your details, and select Cash App. The next screen shows a reference code and a button reading “Open Cash App and send” with your amount. The button opens Cash App with the amount already in, you type the code into the note, send the gift, and then come back to press the button that says you sent it.
The cashtag is $makingheavencrowded. The link fills in the amount but not the note, and the note is what lets a person on the team match your gift to your name, so do not skip it.
What you need ready
You need Cash App with a balance or a linked card, and a whole-dollar amount in mind. You also need a minute at the giving page first, because the reference code that goes in your note is created there when you begin a gift. Keep that screen open while you switch to Cash App so the code is one tap away.
The code looks like MHC followed by a dash and four characters. It is built without the letters O and I or the digits 0 and 1, so there is nothing to misread when you copy it by eye.
The six steps, in order
- Open the giving page, choose an amount, and tick the monthly box only if you want a repeating gift.
- Enter your name, email and mailing address and continue.
- Choose Cash App from the list of methods.
- Read the reference code at the top of the next screen. It sits under the words “Put this in the payment memo.”
- Press “Open Cash App and send” with your amount. The link opens in a new tab and Cash App opens with the amount filled in.
- Type the code into the note, send the gift, then return and press “I’ve sent my gift.”
Why the amount can shift by a few cents
Cash App’s link format only accepts whole dollars, so the giving screen rounds your amount to the nearest dollar when it builds the link. A gift of $37.50 opens in Cash App as $38. Look at the figure shown in Cash App before you press send, and if it is not the amount you meant, correct it there.
Most donors give a preset of $25, $50, $100, $250 or $500, which are already whole dollars and open exactly as chosen. The rounding only matters if you typed an amount with cents.
The code is how your gift gets matched
Cash App does not send our site a message when a payment arrives, so there is no automatic confirmation for this method. What the team sees is an amount and a sender name, and amounts repeat constantly. The reference code in the note is the only thing that ties a Cash App payment to your gift on the website and to the address your receipt should go to.
Your press of “I’ve sent my gift” records that you say you sent it. It is a claim rather than proof, so the gift shows as pending until a person on the team matches it, which the giving page says is usually within a day. The official receipt is then emailed to you, and the donation receipt guide shows what is on it.
How the button behaves on each device
The giving screen says the app opens with the amount already filled in, which is what happens on a phone that has Cash App installed. On a computer there is no app to open, so the link will normally open in your browser rather than in the app. If that happens, the simplest route is to open Cash App on your phone, search for the cashtag $makingheavencrowded, and enter the amount and the code yourself.
Whichever way you get there, check that the recipient reads $makingheavencrowded before sending. If it shows anything else, stop and call or email us to confirm.
The fee on Cash App gifts
Cash App takes about 2.75% of each gift, according to the giving page. On a $100 gift that is about $2.75, and on $500 it is about $13.75, so the mission receives the rest. A mailed check and Zelle carry no fee, which is why the page on ways to donate lists them first when the goal is to keep every dollar.
Fee estimates here are worked from that stated rate rather than copied from a statement, so treat them as close but not exact.
Making a Cash App gift repeat
Tick the monthly box on the giving page before you continue. After your first Cash App gift, the giving page says the team will email you a link to set up the automatic monthly gift. The first gift still needs the code in its note. The page on giving monthly to Making Heaven Crowded compares how each method handles repeating.
