John 13:34-35

John 13:34-35 explained: love one another

On the night before his death Jesus gives his disciples one new commandment. Here is what is new about it and what it says the world will see.

The short answer

Love that others can recognize

In John 13:34-35 Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment: love one another, in the way that he has loved them. He says that this love is how everyone will know they are his disciples. The command is not a vague kindness. Its pattern is Jesus’s own self-giving, and its purpose is visible, a community whose love for each other is noticeable to those watching.

“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:34-35 (KJV)
The night

Said in the upper room, after the foot washing

These verses come in the middle of the evening before Jesus’s arrest. Earlier in chapter 13 Jesus has washed his disciples’ feet, taking the role of the lowest servant in the house. Judas has just left the table, and the disciples do not yet know what will happen next.

So the commandment is given in the shadow of what Jesus is about to do. When he says as I have loved you, the listeners have just seen a picture of what that means, and in a few hours they will see the rest of it.

What is new

An old command with a new pattern

Loving your neighbor was not new, since Leviticus 19:18 already commands it. What is new is the standard. Before, the measure was how you love yourself. Now it is as I have loved you, which includes washing feet and laying down a life.

John uses the same idea later in his first letter. First John 4:19-21 says we love because he first loved us, and that anyone who says he loves God while hating his brother is a liar. Love for God and love for the people around us are meant to go together.

Why it is a witness

A sign others can read

Verse 35 gives a reason that has nothing to do with winning arguments. People will know you are Jesus’s disciples because of your love for each other. That puts the weight of evangelism on the team as well as the speaker. A group that loves each other well gives its message something to stand on, and a group that bites and devours each other makes it harder to believe.

A team before it is an outreach

Making Heaven Crowded began in October 2025 as a handful of college students in Tampa and has grown to more than thirty volunteers in Tampa and Gainesville. Before each outreach the team gathers, packs supplies together and prays, and new volunteers are paired with experienced ones and are never sent out alone. That shared routine is where much of the love in this verse becomes practical.

The same care extends to people who cannot be there. The prayer request FAQ explains how any request submitted through the form is prayed over by the team, and the story of how the ministry started tells how the group came together.

Questions

John 13:34-35, answered plainly

What does John 13:34-35 mean?
Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment to love one another as he has loved them, and says this love will show everyone that they are his disciples. The command asks for self-giving love modeled on Jesus’s own, and it makes the community’s love for each other part of its witness.
Why does Jesus call it a new commandment?
Because the standard changes. Leviticus 19:18 already said to love your neighbor as yourself. Here the measure is as I have loved you, which includes washing feet and giving up his life, and the command is addressed to the community of his disciples, not only to individuals.
Who is the one another in John 13:34?
It refers to Jesus’s disciples, the people gathered around the table that evening and, by extension, believers in every generation. Elsewhere the New Testament extends love to neighbors and even enemies, but this verse speaks first about love inside the community of those who follow Jesus.
How will all men know we are disciples?
By the way believers treat each other. Verse 35 says love for one another is the visible sign. It does not say miracles, arguments or organization are the sign, which suggests that the quality of a team’s relationships may say more about its faith than anything it says aloud.
Is the love in John 13 a feeling?
Not primarily. Jesus defines it by his actions, washing feet and laying down his life, so it shows up as service and sacrifice. Feelings may follow, but the commandment can be obeyed even when they do not, which is why it can be given as a command at all.
How does Making Heaven Crowded build love within its team?
Volunteers prepare supplies, pray and walk outreach together, and new volunteers are paired with experienced team members and never sent out alone. The team also prays over every prayer request submitted through the website. Shared work and shared prayer are the ordinary ways the group practices the command.
