2 Corinthians 5:17-20 explained: sent as Christ’s ambassadors

Paul packs three big ideas into four verses: what happens to a person in Christ, what God did about the broken relationship, and what that makes believers. Here is the plain reading.

The short answer

A new creation, a message and a job

In 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 Paul says that anyone in Christ is a new creation, that God reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave believers the ministry of reconciliation, and that this makes them ambassadors. An ambassador speaks for someone else, so Paul says God is making his appeal through them and urges people to be reconciled to God.

“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV)
The setting

Paul explaining why he does what he does

Second Corinthians is one of the most personal of Paul’s letters, written to a church that had questioned him. In chapter 5 he explains his motive. Verse 14 says the love of Christ compels him, and verse 16 says he no longer regards people from a purely worldly point of view. Everything in the passage follows from that shift in how he sees others.

That context shows the passage is not a slogan. It is Paul describing why he keeps preaching despite hardship, and what he hopes the Corinthians will see in themselves. The ambassador title is a description of a job he and every believer has been handed, not a badge of rank.

Three ideas

New creation, reconciliation and appeal

The new creation in verse 17 says that old things have passed away and all things have become new. It describes what God does in a person, not what the person manages to do on their own. Verse 18 says all of it is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ.

Reconciliation is the repair of a broken relationship, and verse 19 adds that God does not count people’s trespasses against them in Christ. That is why the message can be offered to anyone. The appeal that follows in verse 20 is not a threat but an invitation to accept what has been done.

What an ambassador does

Representing another, not promoting yourself

An ambassador carries the message of the one who sent them and does not invent their own. That matches the point Peter makes in 1 Peter 3:15 about being prepared to give an answer: be ready, and be gentle. It also fits Paul’s teaching in Romans 10:14-15 about how people will hear, where someone has to be sent for people to hear.

The same logic runs through the Great Commission, summarized in what the Great Commission commands. The best guide to the message itself is what the Gospel is. Because the ambassador speaks for another, humility is not optional. The credibility comes from the one who sent them.

In Tampa and Gainesville

Students and volunteers who take the title seriously

Making Heaven Crowded was founded in October 2025 by college students in Tampa, and the idea of being sent is central to how it describes itself. Its guide on how to share the gospel walks through starting a spiritual conversation, and its college ministry in Tampa page explains how students are invited to join.

The ministry also uses media for the same purpose. Its digital ministry on Instagram is meant to share the Gospel and encourage believers, with each branch posting separately. Online or on the street, the aim is the same: to represent Christ honestly and invite people to be reconciled to God.

Questions

2 Corinthians 5:17-20, answered plainly

What does it mean to be a new creation?
Paul says that if anyone is in Christ, the old has passed away and the new has come. He describes a change God makes in a person who belongs to Christ, not a self-improvement project, and the verses that follow explain it as part of reconciliation.
What is the ministry of reconciliation?
It is the job God gave believers of telling others that he has made peace through Christ and does not count their sins against them. Paul describes it in verses 18 and 19 as a message entrusted to believers, not a program of their own.
What is an ambassador for Christ?
An ambassador is an official representative who speaks on behalf of the one who sent them. Paul uses the picture to say that God makes his appeal through believers, who should carry his message accurately and not their own opinions.
Is the passage only for pastors and missionaries?
Paul writes to the whole Corinthian church and uses we throughout. The ministry of reconciliation is described as given to believers generally, even though the church also has people called to full-time ministry.
How does Making Heaven Crowded apply this passage?
Its volunteers in Tampa and Gainesville serve people on the street, talk about Jesus, and share the Gospel online through branch Instagram accounts. College students are both the group it reaches and many of the people doing the reaching.
